Acupuncture and Depression
Depression can be caused by so many things. A thyroid deficiency is a common cause of depression. This is one of the most common causes of depression, in my experience. A low thyroid can cause depression very quickly and easily.
Please see an acupuncturist if you are depressed. There are many energetic imbalances in Chinese medicine that can cause depression:
- Kidney deficiency
- Liver Qi stagnation
- Qi (energy) deficiency
- Lack of sleep
All of these can be treated with Chinese medicine.
In my experience, the most common cause of depression is often kidney energy weakness and liver stagnation. If your body does not have enough energy to function properly, it is impossible to be emotionally healthy. There is no separation between the mind and the body. In fact, every emotion has an organ associated with it. All emotions affect the heart energy.
After about a month of acupuncture and Chinese herbs, you will notice your energy has improved. If you are exhausted and stressed all the time, this needs to be addressed. I usually like patients to be able to commit to coming in twice per week for a month.
Even if you think you are very healthy, very often you have underlying energetic imbalances that need to be addressed. You spend your whole life getting run down and stressed out, you will need to spend a little time to recover complete health.
I have found thyroid problems and food allergies to be a big cause of depression. If you eat food you allergic to it can easily cause depression. Leaky gut is also a factor. From my research, leaky gut is a big factor in auto-immune diseases.
If you have hypothyroid problems, you will probably have to take thyroid hormones for a while. Especially if you have Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, which is an autoimmune disease that attacks the thyroid. Acupuncture and Chinese herbs can improve your energy levels, but they are not enough to boost the thyroid.
